You received small amount check from the IRS but you don't know why?!?

Small checks averaging 18 USD have been flooding mailboxes and bank accounts in the past few week as the U.S. Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service started sending interest payments to about 13.9 million individual taxpayers who applied for federal tax return to cover delays in federal income tax refunds for some 2019 returns. Basically, the IRS is paying a fee for holding on to the tax return money for a longer period of time. So if you were waiting longer than expected to receive your US tax refund and than besides your tax refund check, you have received another small amount check, that is it.

The payments are being made to certain percentage of  people who filed a 2019 tax return by this year's July 15 deadline and either received a refund in the past three months or will receive a refund in the future, according to the IRS.

The check will say "INT" at the left hand corner which means refund interest payment and indicates the interest amount.

In most cases, taxpayers who received their refund by direct deposit will have their interest payment direct deposited in the same account

By law, these interest payments are taxable and taxpayers who receive them must report the interest on the 2020 federal income tax return they file next year. In January 2021, the IRS will send a Form 1099-INT to anyone who receives interest totaling at least $10.

Don’t confuse these checks with your tax refund check, this is not your tax refund these are interest payments only and only certain percentage of tax payers will receive those payments, not all of them.

Besides everything stated above, the IRS also stated online: "We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it. Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return."

However, this year has been very special and completely different than any prior tax year and these are times when you need your tax preparer to be on your side more than ever before.

Treasury i Internal Revenue Service(IRS)-a.
